How to get my 12 week old puppy to walk on a leash?
I have a 12 week old Jack Russel Terrior and he refuses to walk on a leash. I even bought a harness so I am not pulling his neck, and he will will not move his back legs and let me drag him to go and walk outside. He will let me drag him for blocks if I would, but I feel like I am hurting him so I dont. When we walk back to the house he walks though. Its getting difficult, because we will come back inside because I feel like I am hurting him and he will pee on the floor. Has anyone had this happen to them? I dont know what to do. Any suggestions?
My aussie did the same thing to me for about the first week of leash training. The best thing that I’ve found is not the harness or gentle leader (which are great when they’re older, I’ve already got a gentle leader ready for him when he’s bigger) but to make walking on the leash fun. Take treats and make it more about getting outside to see new places. If you walk him in an area where its ok for him to walk on the grass and explore, he might be more relaxed and able to go potty. At this point you may just want to put him on the leash in the front yard and when he wants to stop, let him. After my pup got used to the leash in the front yard, I would walk towards the neighbors house and he would promtly sit down.If I’d say come to him with a treat and he didnt, I’d turn my back to him and wait (not looking at him) and it worked like a charm. Finally he’s learned that he doesnt like not having my attention.
You probably want him to enjoy the walks not feel like he’s being forced. Good luck, it will take some patience and wondering “omg why wont he just walk” type thoughts before he gets it.
